Beauty and the Beatz is cooler than you

A rising sophomore at Woodrow Wilson High School, Beauty and the Beatz does teenage stuff. Her favorite subject is Art. She does homework. Eats family dinners. Enjoys basketball and watching magic tutorials on YouTube. Oh, and you can also hire her to DJ your corporate Christmas party, a job for which she has almost 10 years of experience.

Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 1.25.12 PM

We all know the first big thing people want to talk about is how young you are – [15!] – but what is one other thing people should know about you right away?

I think the other biggest thing would be my creativity when it comes my music selection. I like to be diverse when it comes to music. Hip hop, electronic, reggae, all different types of music. I like to be a diverse DJ.

Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 1.22.47 PM

Which genre is your favorite to play?

If it was totally my call I think I would still go through the genres, but I like hip-hop and electronic trap music. I like to mix them together. It brings a whole different life to the music when you mash it up.

What can people expect from you at any one of your gigs?

They can definitely expect to hear music they’ve never heard before.

How old were you when you started?

6. My parents are into music; my dad was a radio personality, mom was an interior designer. I went to events in Vegas, and plenty of rappers, poets, and DJs would come on stage and perform, and for some reason the DJ always caught my attention. I would stand behind them and pay attention to what they were doing. Then I started asking for equipment.

When did you first realize “Oh wow, I’m pretty good. I can make a career out of this”?

When I played my first couple of gigs – my first gig was at my elementary school when I was 8. At that event people were coming up to me telling me I was doing a great job. I was DJing for two years by then; it was a great feeling having so many people coming up congratulating me, the feeling of making people dance. I wanted to keep [DJing.]

What is your favorite thing to see looking out over the crowd?

People having fun, getting along. Celebrating whatever we’re here for. If it’s a party, I want people to celebrate whatever is going on. Listening to great music, having a great time, never thinking about the negative things.

Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 1.25.02 PM

When you aren’t DJing, what are you doing?

I love to play basketball. I love to do challenging things – I taught myself to solve a Rubik’s cube. [Her current record is 2 minutes.] I like to solve brain games, do certain things that other people can’t do. I taught myself to juggle, spin a basketball on my fingers. I do things just to figure them out.

[Speaking of the Rubik’s cube,] the reason I solved it was because my sister was able to do one side of the cube, and she was gloating about it. So, I said “I’m done,” and then I had to do the whole thing.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure music?

I like all different types of genres. When I play music in the shower I go on Pandora. Every once in a while – I don’t really listen to country that much – but there’s one song that I like to play, when I’m by myself and no one else is around, “Boys ‘Round Here” [by Blake Shelton.]

Top songs on your playlist right now?

“Desiigner” – Panda

“Higher Ground” – TNGHT

“Gage” – Throat

“Children’s Story” – Slick Rick

Who have you worked with before?

There are plenty of DJs I like to link up with. Trayze, I also work with producer DJs, Martin Garrix, Skrillex, Coldplay. I’m young so I like to work with younger DJs.I’m a big fan of a lot of people that I’m close to – I see their work ethic is strong. The people who are super dedicated to what they do, I look up to them.

I DJ’d the Annie movie premiere, I met Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, plenty of people at that event. I DJ’d at the White House. I met a lot of artists there for the Easter egg roll [in 2014,] including Big Sean.

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you want to be?

Before I was DJing I was into all different kinds of instruments. I started with acoustic guitar, then I got into drums – African drums – then electric guitar. I always wanted to be a musician.

Fun fact: I also wanted to be a magician! I think it’s so amazing. The magic happens right in front of my eyes, and I never notice it. Plenty of times I’ve looked up YouTube videos on how to do it, and now it’s not as magical.

What was one of your favorite gigs?

My favorite gig was when I DJ’d at the White House. [The Obamas] are pretty awesome. Michelle Obama told me she was proud of me, and President Obama told me ‘Good job.’

Any funny stories?

Before I play at any event we ask [the organizer] what type of music they want me to play. For this one event the lady who emailed my mom said it was a 90s party, so I got some 90s songs ready to go. I get to the show, and once everyone comes in the building I realize she meant the guests were in their 90s. They were asking for songs and singers I had never heard of. I had to do lots of research on the fly.

Anything else event pros should know about you and experience?

They can follow me on IG and Twitter: @theflyestlildj. I do a mini series on IG “Things DJs Hate.” [We’ve watched, and it’s funny!]

I also [speak to students] at schools, I do master classes anytime people book me for certain events where they want me to teach the kids how to DJ. We have all the equipment for that. I do it all.

She really does.

Book her for your next event!

SXSW 2016 Recap

Screen Shot 2016-03-14 at 2.46.02 PM

This morning we woke up, looked at the rain outside our window, and thought, We need something exciting to counter this dreary day. And then BAM! it hit us – we never recapped our 2016 SXSW trip! And now the sun is peeking out from behind the clouds, ready to join us in our happy nostalgia of getting weird for another year in Austin, TX.

Partnering with our faves at EventsDC and WeDC, we had Rex Riot, Mathias., JC Flores, & DJ Neekola perform at various times throughout the entire weekend-long event. The DJs provided dance music during the day while attendees mingled at the WeDC house, as well as a little at night. In fact, Rex Riot helped warm up the crowd for QuestLove at the crazay closing party. We had a big presence, wearing our Pelonkey tees all over Austin.

In addition to that, our CEO, Nicole, was able to pitch to a ton of tech people at the WeDC house at their Tech Breakfast, which included 1776‘s very own Evan Burfield. And (yes, there’s more!) Nicole participated in the WeDC startup showcase along with other DC innovators, such as our new friends at BlueCart, to spread the good Pelonkey word to other SXSW attendees. At the showcase, we had a booth for one day where visitors could come by, ask questions, and generally be wowed by all things Pelonkey. It was a hit, and we were able to talk to so many new people!

Let’s see… what else? We saw Chromeo perform (can we just get them on our platform already & be BFFs??), met the COO of TechWeek at the TechWeek party, mingled some more, party-hopped, explored the city, met DC mayor, Muriel Bowser, were featured on Buzzfeed’s SXSW promo, saw some Events DC friends – Ashley & Greg – and hung out and rocked the WeDC house from Saturday-Monday.

A huge, gigantic shoutout to Julie, Damelia, and Tiffany for being awesome, as always, and running the WeDC show like the #bosses they are! Wow, the WeDC has made a baller name for itself at SXSW; it’s always the party and place to be! We are so proud to call them Pelonkey supporters and friends. D’awww, DC love, y’all!

We like to think of ourselves as seasoned pros now that we’ve been to SXSW twice…and really it’s just a matter of time before people are partying it up at the PelonkHouse with some kickass DJs, performers, and peeps. 2017, here we come! #DoYouPelonkey

Prequel aka “Pretty Cool”…see what I did there?

Last week Prequel DC had their launch party c/o RJ Whyte Event Production, and let me be (definitely not the first and absolutely not the last) one to say Holy Guacamole, Batman! That place looked awesome-sauce.

Three floors, each with a different theme and decor, scattered with 11, yes 11, talented entertainers from our site.

I’ll let the photos do the talking (a picture says a thousand words, after all), but before we even get to the magnificent visuals, let’s chat about the man who took them: Alexander Morozov. He also took our launch party photos, and he always captures the magic of the event! He manages to get the best expressions, candid conversations, and elegant setups.

Check out Alexander’s full album here.

A big thanks to all the entertainers who helped make the Prequel Launch shine!

O City Perch, how we love thee

“For more than a year now, Pelonkey DJs have been exclusively supplying the soundtrack to City Perch brunches and nighttime parties!” –> Nicole, giirllllll, those words are music to my ears!

You heard right – in the past year, if you’ve eaten at City Perch before catching a weekend movie, you’ve been grooving in your seats to one of Pelonkey’s fantastic DJs. Of the 26 (and counting) entertainers who have rocked the City Perch house so far, we’ve rounded up a number of them to weigh in on the Pelonkey-CP love affair.

– x –

DJ Civil: “I’ve had the pleasure of entertaining patrons and staff at this great establishment since August 2015. The experience has been beyond what I ever expected. First, at the bar area, it’s always nice to see heads nodding and feet tapping. Second, the restaurant is a beauty. Third, and most important, City Perch has a selection of food on its menu that competes with no one in the area.

I recently DJ’d City Perch for Brunch Super Bowl Sunday. Of all the great times I’ve had at City Perch, I’d say the ‘whispered rap battle’ to the beat of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is the best so far! The staff and managers always show how much they enjoy my tune selection. And if it wasn’t for Pelonkey, this new experience would have never happened.”

DJ RAW: “Fantastic food with great presentation from the staff. Great servers. The outdoor area with the fire places lit at night and the outdoor lighting are perfect for the spring, fall and early winter. The space has a ginormous back dining area. It is a hidden gem in Rockville-Bethesda area. When the area is completed you will have to wait in line for a table. Perfect for a dinner before a movie and cocktail afterwards.”

Trayze: “Spinning tunes at City Perch is always a good time!  I have fun setting the vibe at the balcony and getting people in the mood to dance at their tables or at the bar. Booking through Pelonkey is always a breeze. From contracting to payment, it’s always smooth!”

dirtyhands

DJ Dirty Hands: “I’ve been playing here for a few months now, and I love the people that come here. Everyone is surprised that [the DJs] are mixing live. Raasikh [General Manager] is the man!”

LJ MTX: “It was my pleasure to help City Perch kick off 2016 as their DJ. The management and staff were super accommodating from the time I walked through the door. The venue is beautiful and food is amazing. I highly recommend this spot if you are looking for a nice low key night of great food, drinks, and music.”

DJ Dimmy: “DJing at City Perch is always a treat. The staff is great, and the clientele is fun.  Thanks to Pelonkey, the booking process is smooth and flawless.”

DJ Bo: “City Perch continues to be one of my favorite places to DJ because I’m trusted to play a vast amount of music I do not get to play at most bars. The lagers are to die for, and I can’t get enough of the crab cakes. The staff is always awesome, and I look forward to seeing them again in a couple weeks.”

DJ Sean J: “City Perch is one of those great places that DJs love: A cool vibe that allows you freedom to play really cool music along with great food! The Brioche Crusted Maryland Blue Crab Cakes are amazing! For me, playing the music is all about creating the right atmosphere wherever I play. The look and feel of City Perch compliments a lot of the music that I listen to and often don’t get a chance to play out!”

gavin

Gavin Holland: “I love DJing at City perch! There’s a vibrant bar scene, and the build-out of the whole place is really organic and inviting. Musically, I strike that balance between hooks people know and beats that are futuristic and warm. It was a high compliment the other week when someone came up to me and said, ‘I didn’t think I would hear this tonight!’ That’s always the goal. — And it’s great booking through Pelonkey; everyone’s on the same page as far as expectations and payment. By the time I get home, I have an email from Pelonkey letting me know the event is complete, and within a few days, my fee is deposited directly into my bank account. No need to annoy a manager at the end of the night for a check she’s trying to close up shop!”

oz

DJ Oz: “City Perch is a lot of fun. I get to play a wide array of music and the partons really enjoy it. I think it enhances their experience at the restaurant.”

DJ CYD: “City Perch has a great staff and amazing food. It’s a very diverse group of people  from youthful business professionals to wholesome families.”

As-One: “City Perch is a must visit for those in Montgomery County. Great vibes within a gorgeous setting, friendly staff, and delicious menu. I always have a blast DJing there!”

DJ Neekola: “City Perch has been a most wonderful event planner to work with, taking very good care of our DJs, with patrons bouncing up and down while enjoying their meals before peeping a movie in fancy chairs… We love having them on Pelonkey!”

alk cp

DJ Alkimist: “I love spinning at City Perch; it’s a place with a cool vibe with even cooler people.”

We think our entertainers did a pretty sick job of showing how much we LUV this venue…

City Perch, y’all deserve a huge THANK YOU and a full house from now until 2025. Talented DJs, you guys deserve all the success, dancing, and future bookings in the world. Readers, let’s get on that, yeah?

What it’s like to work with DJ Sean J

15980288835_af7b03d145_o

You’re planning a party. A blowout. A major shindig for all your peeps at the hottest club you rented out in DC. You need someone to start the party and keep it going. You say to yourself, Self, who do I know that is talented and awesome besides me? And it hits you. DJ Sean J. Obviously. He’s performed all over the DMV. Rams Head Live, Hippodrome Theater, Liv Nightclub, the list goes on. You must book him. But how? So you email, and he asks you to sign up with Pelonkey. Simple, secure. You make your account. Oh, I am so coming back here to browse more performers for my next gig. And next thing you know, Sean J is sending you a contract through the site, you’re signing it, and your event is booked. Two months later, the party goes off without a hitch, and Sean J has you and your guests rockin’ all night long.

Sean J is an open-format rockstar and officially our first Entertainer to push his outside work & contacts to Pelonkey and book a gig! For that he deserves all of the high fives. And our weekly entertainer feature spot. And probably some cupcakes, which you should send to him ASAP.

IMG_5775

So after the contract went through we hit him up. Asked him how the booking process was. (Easy-peasy, he said). Will he suggest the site to his other friends & contacts? (Already did, he said.) Is he pumped to book more gigs through Pelonkey in the future? Let us quote: “I see soooooooooooo much potential here, and I’ve decided I’m going all in on this…you’re awesome for building this.” No, you’re awesome, Sean J.

We love us some DJ Sean J, and we’re jazzed to have him on our side. He’s got the musical stylings of a high-energy, cross-genre genius, always keeping his audience dancing. And ohhh, you’ll be dancing. Your legs may not be thanking us the next morning, but your ears will.

Pelonkey at 2015 SXSW Interactive

pelonkey sxsw cover

Austin, is it time to come back yet?

It was just a couple months ago that our CEO Nicole and social media intern Danielle hit the road in their swanky Chevy Volt, courtesy of Buick and Digital DC, and headed to Austin, TX to exhibit Pelonkey at SXSW Interactive. 22 hours of driving led them through Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, and parts of Texas where they met local talent, checked out the entertainment scene (or at least what they could see of it during their hour-long rest stops), and spoke to a few performers about their life on the stage.

Once in Austin, Nicole and Danielle hit networking events, parties after parties, and conferences meeting local and remote companies and representatives, their only goal to make sure that everyone knew the name Pelonkey by the time they left. Arriving with a fairly open game plan, the two also spent time in the convention center and on the city streets checking out talented performers (and not only musicians!) that make Austin the live music capital of the country.

The highlight, for sure, was taking part in the Monday night WeDC House event, which was the place to be. Pelonkey was the most sought-after table inside, passing out swag left and right, and DJ Neekola made an appearance outside, spinning between live acts as the evening’s host. A surprise visit and shout out from DJ Kool sealed the deal as the best night of SXSW! No doubt about it, Pelonkey will definitely be back next year.

Throughout all of SXSW and the journey traveling to Austin from DC, Nicole and Danielle had their GoPro turned on, gathering footage of daily events, parties, and interviews with local entertainment.

Below, check out our little photo diary of Pelonkey’s trip to SXSW 2015!

We started our drive bright and early on Saturday morning, March 14. Taking a car down to Austin instead of a plane allowed us the freedom to stop whenever and wherever we wanted to explore. We were out to discover any kind of local talent we could. After conducting some research and outreach at home before the trip, it turned out that hitting the streets yielded the best results. On Day 1, from Knoxville to Nashville to Memphis, the Pelonkey duo was uncovering talent and native flair around every corner. And also eating some crazy good southern BBQ while enjoying the sites!

    IMG_2557 IMG_2569 IMG_2559 IMG_2580
On the second and last exhausting and exhilarating day of the road trip (you try squeezing 22 hours of driving into two days without wanting to stop, drop, and nap), we were anxious to finally arrive in Austin. We took a pit stop in Little Rock and then flew straight on to Texas, where we only stopped for more BBQ (never enough) and finally arrived in the heart of downtown Austin. Our first party (and main event!) that evening was with Tech Cocktail at Maggie Mae’s. From there, we wandered the city streets, hopped to more bars and parties, made new friends, and soaked up as much of Austin as we could until 3am, running on fumes from little sleep.

Continuing with the motto “sleep is for the weak”, we were up and at ’em Monday morning preparing for a long day in Austin. The first half of the day was spent party-hopping, chatting up new people, plotting and planning the Pelonkey launch, and sniffing out free food & drink. Finally, after a focus meeting, it was time to get ready for the We DC House event, where DJ Neekola donned her pink ‘do to hit the decks and Danielle worked the Pelonkey table inside. We DC has been a great supporter of Pelonkey, and partnering with them for their SXSW event was just one of many collaborations to come. Thank you guys so much for helping to bring us to Austin and for putting on such a great party! You guys rock!

The highlight of the night was when Neekola was blasting “Let Me Clear My Throat”, and DJ Kool himself walked over to say “Hey, that’s my song!” He grabbed the mic and gave Neekola and Pelonkey a shout-out, essentially rocking both the party and our world.

The last few days of SXSW, Nicole and Danielle did more of what they came to do: network. Beautiful Austin weather followed them everywhere, and introductions were made to individuals and companies from all across the country.

We are so grateful we were able to go to SXSW 2015, and we can’t stress enough how much we learned and how many great contacts we made. Pelonkey is close to launching, and the excitement we felt in Austin surrounding our venture and the tech culture in general was infectious! Thanks to everyone who helped get us to Austin, and we can’t wait to come back!
